This is a (very late!) supplement to lockstep's answer which just offers a visual demonstration of the difference between the use of \centering and the center environment within figure environments.. Each page shows 2 figures, one using \centering and one using center. The differences in spacing are the result of ordering the two figure environments differently

Text alignment - Overleaf, Online LaTeX Edito

In general you should use center only with text. It adds vertical space before and after the content, which is not really what you want most the time for images, especially not for floats. See Should I use center or centering for figures? and When should we use \begin{center} instead of \centering?. - Martin Scharrer ♦ Apr 30 '12 at 22:4 I have a figure that is wider than the \textwidth of my document. (I don't want to change the \textwidth.) As a result, the leftmost part of the figure is flush with the left margin, while the rightmost part spills into the right margin too much. I'd like to center the figure, so that it will exceed the \textwidth equally on both sides I mess up with things when I try to use the figure-thing: the picture is not appearing with the correct alignment (apparently because I forget the float package). Now I want to use only the graphicx package with \includegraphics.How can I center the \includegraphics without figure?. Not working or doing centering to the document afterwards

The figure environment is used to display pictures as floating elements within the document. This means you include the picture inside the figure environment and you don't have to worry about it's placement, L a T e X will position it in a such way that it fits the flow of the document.. Anyway, sometimes we need to have more control on the way the figures are displayed You can control the position of an image using options for the figure environment, e.g. the [h!] in the example below tells LaTeX to put the figure exactly where it appears in the text, instead of letting it 'float' to a particular place in the document

A frequently seen mistake is to use \begin{center} \end{center} inside a figure or table environment. This center environment can cause additional vertical space. If you want to avoid that just use \centering instead like in this example So, applying the code the output should look like this-Add multiple subfigures in multiple rows. Multiple subfigures can be put in multiple rows by adding a \newline after one row is complete. For example, if you have four figures and you want to put them in 2x2 style, put \newline after two subfigures which will be placed in the first rwo. The command will create a new row for rest of the. The tabular environment is the default L a T e X method to create tables. You must specify a parameter to this environment, {c c c} tells LaTeX that there will be three columns and that the text inside each one of them must be centred. Open an example in Overleaf. Creating a simple table in L a T e X. The tabular environment is more flexible, you can put separator lines in between each column

In Overleaf, you can upload files to your project using the sidebar. To add a caption, simply type \caption{...} below - or above \includegraphics{...} if you want the caption to appear above the figure. You may also want to center the figure by including \centering Hei. I have some text in .tex template and there's figure right after it. I don't know how to cut margin between text and figure (grey area in the image). Figure is defined as: \begin{figure}[h! Making Figures in LaTeX. To make a figure in LaTeX is simpler than it looks and just requires a few commands. Use the graphicx package with the following command in the preamble: \usepackage{graphicx} Yes, there are others but this is the best and most widely used. Insert the figure: using the figure environment as follows I am working on my thesis and I am struggling with placing 2 images next to each other, so that the second image would be centered vertically along the first one. I was also trying to use subfigur

Wow, smack me upside the head, viraptor. I understand what you mean by unbalanced now - length. Anywho, it seems to work for me. I'm using \documentclass[twocolumn]{article} with \usepackage{balance} in my preamble, then a \balance command just before I start my text for that section. Using the [t] for the figure, I get what I expect: figure at the top of a page in my text, and balanced-length. In Latex, I want to add a reference in the legend of a figure, like: \begin{figure} \caption{This is the legend of this figure (reprinted from \cite{something}).} \end{figure} but the citation is not allowed to be placed in the the caption, only in the text. My bibliography is working on any other places of the text

In addition, you can use the \setlength command with an appropriate switch, before the \begin{document}.For example, \setlength{\intextsep}{1ex} % set space above and below in-line float or \setlength{\intextsep}{-1ex} % remove extra space above and below in-line float Some useful switches are, \floatsep - Space between floats. \dblfloatsep for 2 column forma At time, it might be desirable to wrap text around a float (a figure, in our case) so as not to break the flow of the text. There are a number of packages in L a T e X to accomplish this task, though they requires some amount of manual tuning in most of the cases.. Using wrapfig. To use wrapfig, we need to include the following line in preamble

There are different way of placing figures side by side in Latex, subcaption, subfig, subfigure, or even minipage. This post will tell you which one is the best. subcaption A useful extension is the subcaption package (the subfigure and subfig packages are deprecated and shouldn't be used any more), which uses subfloats within a single float figure { display: inline-block; border: 1px dotted gray; margin: 20px; /* adjust as needed */ } figure img { vertical-align: top; } figure figcaption { border: 1px dotted blue; text-align: center; } Because each figure is an inline-block, you can basically repeat the unit three times per row, either adding a <br> after the every third one, or. Open an example in Overleaf If your document class is not book or you need more control over the page counter and the numbering style, see the next example: \documentclass { article } \usepackage [utf8] { inputenc } \usepackage [english] { babel } \pagenumbering { roman } \begin { document } \tableofcontents \section { First section } \setcounter { page }{ 3 } Some text here.. LaTeX by default recognizes table and figure floats, [...]. Floats are there to deal with the problem of the object that won't fit on the present page, and to help when you really don't want the object here just now. To provide a caption outside of figures one needs to use package caption, which provides the captionof command Re: How to center math items ? Post by Johannes_B » Tue Jun 24, 2014 5:43 pm Simply think of array as the maths equivalent of tabular, which to tell the truth it really is

Breaking the document flow in L a T e X is not recommended unless you are creating a macro.Anyway, sometimes is necessary to have more control over the layout of the document; and for this reason in this article is explained how to insert line breaks, page breaks and arbitrary blank spaces In your text you can refer to that number (see figure~\ref{fig:myFig}). One needs those numbers, because in a well typeset book, figures and tables are placed where they best fit (floating). If you prevent your objects from floating, placing the figures under the describing text, there is no need to refer to a number, and there is no need to describe them anymore, since »see the figure below. This can be activated in your document premable. For example, to set a document to have boxed figures and boxed tables: \usepackage{float} \floatstyle{boxed} \restylefloat{figure} % To re-style the 'figure' float \restylefloat{table} % To re-style the 'table' float. Summary. That concludes all the fundamentals of floats \end{center} \end{figure} 21. Captions A figure or table without a caption feels lonely. All figures and tables should have captions.Use the \ caption command for this purpose. Example: \begin{table}[htbp] \begin{center} \begin{tabular}{ccc} Tom & Dick & Harry \\ Mary & Cathy & Anne \\ \end{tabular Any L a T e X command can be used here, except for floating elements such as figures and tables. In the example, the section title and a small paragraph are set here. The text enclosed inside the tags \begin{multicols} and \end{multicols} is printed in multicolumn format. Most people prefer to not save their figures in the same directory as the tex file itself since it would clutter up quickly. A common solution is to save all figures in a sub-folder of the main directory and us BUT this is a fixed one, which looks exactly like my Matlab-figure. So I tried to export it as svg-file to open it in Inkscape to save it as .tex and .pdf_tex (simultaniously). But sadly the text is considered as picture and I cant use it in my Latex-document as I wish I need to change the section titles position in the article class.
